Our visit to Gran Canaria airport

Picture added by Pedro.

BEFORE THE VISIT

Last March  we went to visit the Gando Airport which is between Telde and Ingenio. Before going there, we made some exercises about the airport vocabulary in the class and also, our English teacher showed us two YouTube videos with lots of vocabulary and useful expressions that we could use there. By the way, here you have the links to the YouTube videos if you’re interested(David):

AT THE AIRPORT

When we arrived there, a man received us in the check in desk zone and then he explained how his job at the airport is, the rules we had to respect, etc, and then he took us into the departure lounge but before we went through  a control because we could carry dangerous things or prohibited inside the airport.(Marta)

THE SECURITY CONTROL

Then, we passed the security control and I had a problem because there was a pair of  scissor in my bag and I didn’t know it, so the worker asked me if I had a knife or something like that. I said not and I opened my bag but there was a scissor inside and the worker took away me my scissor. (María)

After the talk, we passed through the security control (a funny fact: a friend called Jorge forgot to take out of the bag a nail and the police confiscated it!)  (David S.)

All my classmate passed across it but, when I passed across it, the alarm machine started to sound because in my pocket there was my mobile phone. I repeated it; I went back and passed another time. After this, the police women who check the bags with the X-rays, saw in my bag a sharp thing. I opened my bag and I could see that the sharp thing was my big technology’s nail. The police women took it and now, I  know nothing about it. (Jorge)

We laughed a lot because a partner had a metallic thing and he was very scary when the man said to him that he had to open the bag. (Waru)

After that, we went to the terminal and we could see some planes, airplanes and an expensive jet, also, we went to the new area and there the man, who gave us a small explanation said to us that “we are the first group which step on this area”. (Jorge)

And we got into the bus to go to visit where the falconers and the firefighters work. Before getting there, we had to pass another security control! (I think that the airports are one of the safest places in the world). (David S.)

THE FALCONS

In the second place, we went to see the hawks that are animals very important for the security of the passengers, because the hawks are used  to scare away other birds that can fly around the airport and they could crash with a plane. The visit to the hawks was the thing that I liked the most, because they said that the hawks are very spectacular. (Pedro)

They had a lot of birds like eagles and hawks which are used for chase other birds which are in the path of the airplanes. They let us touch them, it was very exciting! They explained us lots of things about these birds and their job, for example, I didn’t know that the hawks and the eagles were more peaceful when they had their eyes covered. I really like this part of the excursion.  (Waru)

I liked the part where the hawk, in the middle of the conversation, pooped above the man's arm, What a laugh! But other than that, I learned a lot in this part. (Varinia)

THE AIRPORT  FIREFIGHTERS

Later a firefighter very kind called Antolin explained us how is his work at the airport and also he showed us all his heavy clothes and the objects that he has to use being firefighter.

…a firefighter came into the room but he wasn’t like the firefighters of the films, he wasn’t a very strongman… he was very funny! (Waru)

He showed us all the costumes for the different situations of emergencies and he made a demonstration about how he put his clothes on quickly when there was an emergency and he made it in one minute more o less, he was so quick! (Elisa)

So we learnt a lot about this and some people decided that they want to be firefighters in the future.  (Waru)

Finally we saw an exhibition of how a fireman truck extinguished a fire, this experience was incredible. (Pedro)

At the end of such explanation, we decided to take a picture in a group, with everyone who was there. (Varinia)

After the exhibition, we took a photo of us with the truck and then, we got into the bus again to go back to school. WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY! (David S.)

The trip to the airport I think it was hilarious (Ilenia)

The visit to the airport was very interesting as I had never seen all the facilities… (Jazael)
